September



* Knitted Felted Clogs

Saturdays 9/11,9/18, and 10/2 - 1:30 to 3:30 $45 A holiday gift favorite! Knit on large needles and then felted in the washing machine. Quick and very appreciated.

Materials needed - Fiber Trends Felt Clogs Pattern, 3 skeins Lamb's Pride Worsted Weight (If you want sole and cuff in contrasting color buy two skeins of that color and another color for the uppers), US size 13 24" AND 16" circular needles. (ALL MATERIALS AVAILABLE AT THE STORE)

* Knitting Tune-Up

Saturdays 9/11and 9/18 - 3:30 to 5:30 $30 If you learned how to knit a while ago and need a refresher or just want to make sure that you have all the basics before starting a new project, some to this two-session class and revive your casting on, binding off, knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing.

Materials needed size 7 or 8 straight needles and one skein of Peaches & Creme yarn. (ALL MATERIALS AVAILABLE AT THE STORE)

* Beginning Knitting

Wednesdays 9/22, 9/29, and 10/6 - 7-9pm $45 Ready to start knitting? We will go step by step and at the end of the class you will know how to knit, purl, cast-on, bind-off, increase and decrease. You will also end up with at least three sweet dishcloths to use at home. Materials needed - size 7 or 8 straight needles, Peaches & Creme yarn, stitch markers. (ALL MATERIALS AVAILABLE AT THE STORE)

* Introduction to Wet Felting

September 25th 11:30-12:30 Learn the basics to wet felting, make some fabric that can be made into many things and give you ideas to create more with Vicky Medley in this hour class. Lots of fun! 20.00 materials included ****

* First pair of Socks

Saturdays 10/2, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30 - 11:30am to 1:30 pm $60 You have wanted to learn to knit socks so here is your chance! It is easier than it looks and you can enjoy it.We will be working on a simple pair of adult socks with a ribbed top.You need to be able to knit, purl, cast-on and bind-off.

We have a knitting tune-up class at the beginning of September if you need to brush up your skills. Materials needed - 2 skeins of Nature Spun fingering weight yarn (two different colors), one set of size 2 double-pointed needles. (ALL MATERIALS ARE SOLD AT GOSSAMER)

* Knitting UFO

Saturdays 10/2 and/or10/30 at 3:30 too 5:30 pm and/or another class 10/30 1:30 to 3:30pm $15 per session This is always a fun class. Bring a project that you are stuck on or something that has been put away for a while and get back on track. Or come to learn a new technique that you are interested in. ****

* Tapestry or Object Needle-Felting

Saturday 10/9 11:30-1:30 Learn the techniques of painting a picture with wool or if you prefer learn to make a 3 dimensional object from teacher and artist Jessica Peill-Meininghaus. Materials included 30.00 ****

* Beginning Crochet-Granny Square

Saturday 10/9 1:30pm-3:30pm $30. Learn the basics of crochet and make a granny square and learn where you can go beyond. Materials available at the store****

* Brioche Knit Baby Blanket

Thursdays 10/14, 10/21 and 10/28 - 7 to 9pm $45 We will make a small baby blanket with a two-color brioche rib as the centerpiece. We will also practice basic brioche and half-brioche knitting. You must be able to knit, purl, increase, decrease, cast-on and bind-off to take this class.

* Beginning Spinning wheel Workshop

Saturday 10/16 from 9am-4pm break from 12-1 $80 This all day workshop will introduce you to the different fibers to spin, the techniques and use of a spinning wheel with teacher Barbara Andersen $10 extra for rental of wheel (please let us know at registration if you need one) all fibers are included ****

* Knit your First Child-size Sweater

Wednesdays 10/20,10/27,11/3, 11/10 and 11/17 - 7 to 9pm $75 With a soft bulky yarn you can quickly knit up a simple sweater for a child. You will learn how to choose yarn, select a pattern that fits and work through all the steps for a basic sweater. Hopefully the first of many sweaters. You must be able to knit, purl, increase, decrease, cast-on and bind-off to take this class.

We have a knitting tune-up class at the beginning of September if you need to brush up your skills. Materials needed - Basic Child's sweater pattern and necessary yarn and needles. (all available at the shop)

* Small Felt Doll

Saturday 11/6, 11/13 and 11/20 - 11:30am to 1:30pm $45 While walking around the store you may have seen some darling felt dolls that live on the shelf above the wool felt - many have asked how to make them so we decided to organize a class so you could make one before the holidays. Bring some sewing needles and a pair of scissors and the rest of the materials list is at the shop.

* Nalebinding for Beginners

Saturday 11/6 1:30pm-5:30pm $30. Learn the ancient art of nalebinding that precedes both knitting and crocheting. It is the art of knotting with a needle and yarn. It was practiced all over the world. Samples are at the store. You will make fingerless gloves or pouch using a korriegan or manon stitch. Materials: 1 skein Brown Sheep bulky yarn and yarn needle (MATERIALS AVAILABLE AT THE STORE) ****

* Embroidery Five easy stitches

Saturday 11/13 1:30pm-3:30pm $30. All materials included in this class.Learn embroidery using wool embroidery thread on wool felt. Make a present- cuff bracelet, coffee cosy, book mark or change purse.****

Class size will be 4 to 10 students. Some classes max will be 8. Class will be cancelled if less than 4. 50% payment due during sign up and paid in full by first class.

About Our Teachers

Rose Sabel-Dodge ~ is the owner of Gossamer. She worked 9 1/2 Years running the "Spring Creek Store" (The Portland Waldorf School Store). She is a fiber artist with a background in weaving, knitting, sewing, creating, etc . . .

Susan Lake ~ is a talented fiber artist. She graduated form an obscure art school in Boston many years ago, and has been busy creating ever since. Her business name is The Tattered Faerie.

Marie Barton ~ has been working with fiber & felt for four years. Some of you might have seen her fantastic work at Gossamer. She is an active member of the Columbia Stitchery Guild and a talented artist. She has worked in many mediums including pastels & printmaking. She volunteers regularly at Scraps.

Susan Wilcox ~ is a longtime expert knitter who has taught both children and adults.

Jessica Peil-Meinghaus ~ is a graduate of Waldorf education, and a longtime doll maker, needle felter, artist, and crafter. Her beautiful work is displayed at Gossamer and throughout Portland.

Patricia Thom ~ is an extraordinary handwork teacher presently at the Village School, long time knitter, and previous owner of Abundant Yarn.

Vicky Medley ~ is a parent at the Village School. She is a long time crafter and specializes in the wet felting technique.
